The beginning of J P Haynes Lumber Company goes back several years
prior to 1947. Mr. Haynes operated a small portable sawmill in the woods, where he bought tracts of timber from individuals.
He would move his mill, which was powered by a Buick automobile engine, from tract to tract. Being the innovative person that
he was, Mr. Haynes put wheels under his mill for easier moving. He could move the mill to the new tract, set up and be sawing
in one day. He sold his lumber green and unfinished to the planing mills.
In 1947 J P Haynes purchased property in
the Keithsburg Community of Cherokee County, just north of Canton. The property had been used for a peach orchard but was
no longer productive. One big advantage of this acreage was a railroad siding, so it was ideal for a lumberyard. He bought
a used planer and in April of 1947, J P Haynes Lumber began shipping dry, dressed lumber.
During the early years almost
all of the lumber was sold to Wholesale distributors. It was loaded into boxcars and shipped by rail throughout the eastern
United States. These were the post World War II years and government contracts used a large part of the shipped lumber.
